For novice swimmers, I recommend that they have their nose clip ready before they start using the snorkel because they will be able to focus more on their mouths. Most swimmers and non-swimmers start straight with the snorkel, but it quickly discourages them. They have difficulty at breathing, water flows into their nose and they are unable to blow it the water from the snorkel that flows into the tube when the swimmer turns, or splash water.
